Child Abduction, Across Interstate
and International Boundaries
A unilateral relocation of a child, by one parent without the prior
knowledge or authorization of the other parent, is always a highly
disturbing event, affecting not only the child but the other parent
and the extended family as well. This is true, whether or not
there is a court custody order in place. An attorney familiar and
experienced with applicable child abduction and relocation law, such
as the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act, the
Parental Kidnapping Prevention Act, and the Hague Convention on the
Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, should be consulted
as soon as possible when a child has been or is about to be surreptitiously
relocated.
